In 2016 the Bishops of Scotland established an Independent Review Group (IRG) as an autonomous body, separate from the Church, to review safeguarding standards and carry out regular independent audits. As part of this review process, the Bishops agreed that each year the IRG would oversee an independent audit of two Scottish dioceses. This audit, which is being conducted by the Social Care Institute for Excellence / Children in Scotland (SCIE/CiS), will take place for the first time this year and the two dioceses to be audited are the Diocese of Galloway and the Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh. Our Archdiocese will be audited next month, 26-28 March 2019.

The independent audit team want to understand what is working well and what has gone wrong in the past with regard to Safeguarding and want to hear, therefore, from people with first-hand experience of how people in diocesan roles have responded, or failed to respond, to disclosures of abuse or sharing of concerns.

An information sheet from the Social Care Institute for Excellence / Children in Scotland (SCIE/CiS) is to be advertised prominently in parishes, including on parish websites, and highlighted in the parish announcements at the end of the Sunday Masses. This information sheet can be read by clicking here.
